What do bands want?

Published by lifeswords under Uncategorized Edit This

I have been asking myself this question as I have done a lot of work for a highly recommended promotional company and some of the bands I have come across have the wrong attitude by far. Here is this company who takes bands who may have 300 fans and a little over 50 plays a day and they completely transform them in a matter of months to a band who has 5,000 fans and well over 20,000 plays and views in their statistics. Now the first couple bands they dealt with saw a huge jump in their performance and were getting gigs booked due to this sudden surge in their exposure. As the company grew popular, like any company, there are people who feel this is not necessary. This is where the “less fortunate” bands come in, my job at the promotion company was to filter out the emails and send the promoters which bands are going to be worked on and then which ones were just inquiring about the service. A handful of bands emailed us basically saying that they could do exactly what we were doing in the same amount of time, and they did not even have to pay a fee. So we held a little bet with one of the bands and if they could reach the same statistics and be able to get in contact with the same production companies, record labels and film producers we were able to get into to help sell their music, then we would work for them for free for one year.

Needless to say they did not come even close, we surpassed them in numbers and in fans interaction with their myspace and youtube pages. We also were able to take two of the bands we successfully promoted and we were able to send in their press kits through our management and have them looked at by two of the largest labels on the map right now. One of the bands ended up getting a meeting with the label and they are currently in talks for a deal that should end up getting written by mid-09. Why are bands so angry and nasty to a service that is simply trying to help them and provide them with something that took us 112 employees and years to gather our resources and build a successful team from?

Im not sure why they are not happy that we are doing what we are doing, but while they are sitting in their driveways doing sound-check,  the company I worked for is doing business in New York City or Los Angeles helping a band secure a major record deal because the promotional efforts that this company helped offer, catapulted the band from a no-name to someone who has well over 15,000 plays A DAY and a steady stream of new fans and friends.
